How to Use Instagram for Your Small Business

how to use instagram for small business

With 2022 now in full swing (we can’t believe it either!), it's time to talk how you are going to best use your social media presence to support and grow your business.  To make the most of customer's attention (and pocket), your business needs to be visible, attractive and engaging for customers in spaces where they spend most time. Yes, a shop front in town will do just that, but don’t forget where many of us spend hours of the day scrolling…Instagram. And so, here’s a few top tips to help you get the most out of your Instagram in the next few months.

Engage your community

Use the additional features on Instagram to create experiences that your customers can interact with. We’re talking polls, quizzes and interactive GIFs, as well as Instagram Live, Reels and Stories. When you engage and ask your followers for their voice, opinions and ideas, you start to build trust and transparency, as well as getting great feedback you can use to up your social game.

Go Live

Instagram Live opens up a whole new level of user engagement. Brands can showcase their products or services, demonstrate in-real-life use, discuss the production process – you can talk about anything in great detail which creates really valuable information for customers. Users that join the Live can pose questions and make comments in real-time, creating an authentic brand-customer experience you can’t simulate anywhere else.

Engage your community
Video is everything

Video content is everything on Instagram and you must use it showcase your products or services in fun, engaging and authentic ways. Product shots just don’t cut it anymore, so hit the record button instead. The beauty of Instagram Reels is that you can use trending edits and music as inspiration which not only makes the creativity part much easier, but also boosts your video’s chance of reaching a much wider audience. Don’t stress about not having all the tech skills, your smartphone and the editing software in Instagram is all you need. And the more ‘real’ you can be, the better.

Video is everything
Word of mouth

You need to tell everyone about your new business. Your friends, your family, neighbours, local publications, radio stations, competitors, other businesses, the community etc. Write a press release and send it to the local publications, invest in print and digital advertising, be present on socials and use your customer service skills to set yourself apart.

And with that, you’ll have launched a brand that is set up for success. But, of course, the hard work has only just begun.

What clients are saying

It was great working with Jennica and Claire from Barefruit Marketing. They really took time to understand my project and delivered amazing ‘pitch’ / media release to appeal to journalists and media corporations. I felt comfortable sharing my ideas, and they were able to capture my vision and marry it to their expertise. Would highly recommend.

I'd like to say a huge thank you to Claire and Charlotte from Barefruit Marketing who have helped me in the last couple of months to pull this amazing media event together. The agency has offered their services on a pro bono basis, I am so grateful for the work they have done. Claire and Charlotte have been my unconditional support crew to lean on for advice and ideas, and I am excited about how our relationship will move forward in the next few months.

I have been using Barefruit for my SEO and website development for Behind the Barrel. The best part about Barefruit is your're not just getting the attention of one of their staff members. The whole team works together to help bring the best possible outcome for your business marketing. I highly recommend Evan and his team if you want to take your business marketing to the next level.

Just want to say a HUGE thank you to each and every one of the team for the website. You all went over and above and most certainly went above my expectations. I'm extremely happy with it (been bragging a bit about it just quietly) and couldn't have done it without you all. Thank you for bringing this to life.

the work

The client came to Barefruit Marketing wanting to drive traffic to their Shopify site but first needed some content. We discussed different types of content creation including the number 1 medium for marketers in 2021 - video - it's the biggest trend across all social and digital platforms. Byron Bay-based Dr Moose knew it was time to jump on board.

The Brand video
First up, we created a brand video, shorter edits that could be used across organic and paid social media platforms, and still imagery to support. The video has turned out perfectly and better than they could have dreamed of, and now the clients have a thirst for making their business the best it can be and look forward to working with us for the foreseeable future.

Social
We implemented the video and still imagery from the shoot to set up their FB ads with a combination of Dynamic Catalog ads, Dynamic Retarget Ads, Carousel Ads, and Single Video Ads with various conversion goals - to drive traffic and sales to their Shopify website.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
We are now managing their SEO/keyword program too and as a part of this, we conducted Search Engine Optimisation and Conversion Rate Optimisation audits to recommend ways to build trust and increase their conversion rate.

Results
In the first month - traffic increased by 171%, sales went up 335% and their conversion rate improved by 77%. We are seeing a consistent growth in traffic and sales over the last few months.

what the client had to say…

“After years of struggling to do the social media ads for my business we finally decided to put some money towards getting some professional help. I am so thrilled to have found Barefruit Marketing! They have improved our ad performance within the few months we’ve been with them, we’ve even commissioned a professional marketing video to be made by them now which has turned out perfectly, better than we could have dreamed of, which really represents our streetwear brand. They now handle our SEO too after such great results from our first encounters. If you are a business who’s been trying with ads like we were but don’t want to risk throwing money at a professional service, don’t wait as long as we did and give them a call! Jennica and Lauren have been absolutely amazing to work with, they are friendly and professional but most importantly to us, they really click with us as people and working with them has been fun! We now have a total new thirst for making our business the best it can be and will continue working with Barefruit with all of our digital marketing needs for the foreseeable future! Thank you Barefruit ??"

    Agriculture Awareness Video Campaign

    The work

We recently produced a series of short videos after winning a project with Lismore City Council. The brief was to create a series of videos to showcase and promote agriculture in the Lismore region. The videos were a key element of their Economic Development Strategy and were to highlight agricultural opportunities in the Lismore Region as well as help grow, support and diversify the Lismore economy.

During pre-production, Barefruit worked closely with Lismore City Council to help bring their vision to fruition. This consisted of internal meetings, location scouting, visual storyboards and shot lists. The original brief was to shoot some inspirational imagery and create five short videos that could be used in an integrated agricultural awareness campaign, however, during post-production, it was evident the content that was captured on the day of the shoot was filled with “lots of gold” which resulted in each video being approximately double in length.

The end result was a series of beautiful videos that promote the local area, opportunities available and the endless possibilities on offer within the region. The style of the videos is down to earth, visually pleasing and gives the viewer a sense of inspiration and determination to set up their own agricultural business, no matter the product or scale of their project.
