New Business Marketing

New Business Marketing

We were thrilled to be part of the very first Ballina Wave. Ballina’s very own magazine has been a long time coming, and now that it is finally here, we are very excited about what’s to come. As a business that has operated out of Ballina for the past 6 years, the local community has a special place in our heart. With the launch of the new Wave, it is an ideal time to talk about how to promote a new business, or even a rebrand for that matter. Let’s get stuck in.

Branding is more than a logo

From the get-go, you need to build a strong, recognisable and memorable brand. This starts with a brand strategy session. Work out what you want your brand to embody, its mission, its values and its personality and write it all down. From this, choose a name that represents what you stand for, and what you sell. Then, it’s time for your brand logo. Develop something that fits in with your industry and target market but stands out from the competition.

Branding is more than a logo
Go digital

A brand should never launch without a digital presence, simply because people need to be able to find more information about you. Meet people where they spend the most time - online. Your website doesn’t need to be cutting-edge or state-of-the-art, but it must reflect your branding and be easy for customers to navigate. And if you can’t get a website up fast enough, at least have a Google My Business listing and social profiles. We offer the best web design service on the Gold Coast.

Collect leads

A database is one of the most important assets for any business. Invest time into it, build it and use it. On your website, entice people to leave their details in exchange for something of value to them. You could ask them to subscribe to a newsletter for a 10% discount or get in touch for a free quote. Capture their details using forms that save everything into the backend of your website. Then use this list to nurture those people with personalised messages and (hopefully) convert them into sales. Top tip: every month or so, download your database from the website, so you have an updated hard copy on hand. You never know what could happen.

Get your socials on point

Before your launch, get content loaded into your Instagram and Facebook profile so people have somewhere to explore and engage with your brand. Build your brand image on Instagram with at least nine tiles, and make your profile pleasing to the eye using a colour theme. You can use your social platforms to build anticipation and excitement for your launch.

Use social accounts as platforms for your launch
Word of mouth

You need to tell everyone about your new business. Your friends, your family, neighbours, local publications, radio stations, competitors, other businesses, the community etc. Write a press release and send it to the local publications, invest in print and digital advertising, be present on socials and use your customer service skills to set yourself apart.

And with that, you’ll have launched a brand that is set up for success. But, of course, the hard work has only just begun.

What clients are saying

It was great working with Jennica and Claire from Barefruit Marketing. They really took time to understand my project and delivered amazing ‘pitch’ / media release to appeal to journalists and media corporations. I felt comfortable sharing my ideas, and they were able to capture my vision and marry it to their expertise. Would highly recommend.

Brand Strategy, Product Branding & Packaging

Wildling Seven Mile Brewing Co Can

The work

Barefruit were ecstatic to be awarded the brief to develop the branding (from naming straight through to production) for Seven Mile Brewing Co.’s most recent creation – a fresh and zingy Ginger Beer. The project kicked off early January 2021 and went through the full creative process to arrive at a playful, artistic, and very distinctive result – Wildling Hard Ginger Beer.

Seven Mile Brewing Co., wanted a brand that appealed primarily to women, but also men who seek out beer alternatives, and those who love a cocktail (Pro tip: Wildling goes amazingly well with spiced rum and fresh lime, over ice). To capture these key market segments, the brand personality needed to be unique, fun, cheeky and visually catching. At the same time,  communicating its USP’s: use of local ingredients, the tangy ginger kick and a subtly, sweet finish

The Barefruit project management team had an excellent opportunity to ‘flex their creative muscles’ for this project with quite a bit of freedom to explore naming and design options. The process took the team on a 7-month journey to conceptualise, design and refine each and every detail of the artwork for the cans and cartons.

Creative Lead Alex Wales says

“We started with concepts and moodboards to present the client with lots of options and completed a full competitive analysis to ensure that the result was going to be distinctive, unique and match the product itself. Once we finalised the artwork, we worked on the details to the cans and cartons until everything was approved and signed off; ready for production.”

Barefoot Marketing? No, we’re BareFRUIT Marketing

    Barefruit or Barefoot

Thanks to the Barefoot Investor, we can’t tell you how often people call us Barefoot Marketing. The time has come to settle it once and for all. We are called Barefruit Marketing. That’s Bare, like naked and Fruit like, apples and oranges.

    What’s in a name

Talking about names, now is a great opportunity to give you a little insight into to how and why we landed with the name Barefruit Marketing. The agency, founded by Claire from her loungeroom, was established to help local businesses grow and flourish. Business owners in the Northern Rivers (and anywhere for that matter) are so good at what they do, but often, they don’t have the time and energy to spend marketing their business. We all know that marketing is key to the success of any business, big or small. And so, the agency was born.

    How it came together

When working with businesses who don’t have the time and energy to think about marketing, we discovered we needed to be completely transparent; we tell it how it is, no jargon, no waffle and no round-about explanations. From this, came the ‘Bare’ part of the Barefruit name. Being real with our clients, suppliers and team is one of our values. What you see is what you get, so ‘Bare’ which means ‘having no cover up’ fits the agency’s mission perfectly.

As marketers, our ultimate goal is to grow business for our clients. We work hard to see them increase sales and be successful and self-sufficient. As such, we are helping businesses bear the fruits of success and this is how the word ‘fruit’ came into the mix. With that, Claire and Evan named the agency Barefruit Marketing. What’s more, the word play in ‘helping businesses to bare fruit’ was too perfect to ignore.

    Helping Businesses Bare Fruit
    The Barefruit brand values

It’s really important that a business name reflects its output, as well as what that business stands for. Our brand values determine who we are and guide the way in which we work as employees and operate as a business. At Barefruit, we’re Curious, Real, Brave and Fun.

    Curious

We are naturally curious. We allow ourselves to explore the less obvious, ask lots of questions and invite debate. We encourage a working environment that stimulates ideas, smart thinking and meaningful personal growth.

    Real

We are honest and transparent. What you see is what you get. We are down to earth. No jargon. Plain speaking. We are realistic, we won’t over promise.

    Brave

We strive to create an environment that supports instinctive and insightful thought – whether it supports or challenges the status quo. We are passionate and well-tuned, unafraid to push boundaries and have the confidence to trust our gut and pursue our beliefs.

    Fun

We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We like to have a laugh at work and with our clients. Coming to work is fun.

    Our services
What we do at Barefruit Marketing

We are a full service, creative agency which means we have the resources to implement any idea (as long as it not too far-fetched). From digital campaigns, websites, TV commercials and PR to events, flyers, SEO and logo refreshes, we pride ourselves on our ability to develop and implement the best solutions for our clients. Our services include (but aren’t limited to):

The Barefruit team is made up of a diverse group of marketing specialists with international talent. We've worked on the big clients in the big cities, and want to offer that same service to businesses in our community. Of course, we also have clients interstate and even across the globe.

    Our team

If you’re going to take anything away from this, we are Barefruit Marketing, not Barefoot Marketing. Should you ever need help with marketing your business, or know of a friend who might, remember Barefruit Marketing. And even if you don’t, we’ve made sure our website will come up in our search results even if you remember us a Barefoot Marketing.

Winners in Business and Professional Services

    Barefruit Wins

Last Friday evening, we (Barefruit Marketing) were awarded the 2021 Business Excellence in Business and Professional Services award, proving that not even the statewide lockdown could dampen our spirits.Originally, there was going to be a Gala evening, but that didn’t go to plan, due to the current lockdown. Instead, the Ballina Chamber of Commerce honoured local businesses for their excellence by inviting entrants of the 2021 Ballina Shire Business Excellence Awards to tune in to the local community radio station, Paradise FM to celebrate this year’s winners within the Ballina Business Community.

    Professional and Business Services Award
Highly Commended in Excellence on Small Business
    Nothing can stop us

The entire team dressed in our fancy award threads (from the waist up) for the ‘virtual awards’ and tuned into a team Zoom call while listening to Paradise FM, excitedly anticipating the announcement – with bubbles at the ready. Thrilled and emotional, we were awarded ‘2021 Business Excellence in Business and Professional Services’ and were highly commended in the category, ‘Excellence in Small Business’. The competition was high going head-to-head against other local businesses including consulting agencies, real estate, and mortgage broking services.

Agency Co-founder and Director Evan Harding says,

"We might be a small agency, but we’re ‘perfectly formed’, producing creative work on par with city-based agencies. The results speak for themselves, as clients around the country have trusted us to achieve their objectives for over nine years.”

The full list of awards and winners

    Evan continues,

“Being recognised for our achievements over the last 12 months during our most challenging year is something we are really proud of. The effect of the pandemic on the economy and our clients meant we had do things differently so having a ‘virtual awards’ night wasn’t going to impact our celebrations.”

A bit about Barefruit (that's us!)

We find solutions and implements marketing strategies for our clients, including branding, TV commercials, print advertising, online marketing, websites, event management, PR, social media, direct marketing and more. While we are based in Ballina, we do work with client across the country. We are passionate about client relationships, workplace wellbeing with regular team updates and giving back to the local community whenever we can.

    Evan continues,

“We have assembled a team of internationally experienced professionals, each passionate about producing high quality marketing solutions, all from our Ballina office, or currently from home. We have an eye for what looks great and an attention to detail. We love what we do and we’re proud to call Ballina ‘home’".

    Happy Team
    Working together to pull through

Co-founder and Director Claire Harding comments,

“Barefruit has created a culture that allows for a tight knit group of people who truly care about each other. We work around individual schedules and have flexible hours which allow life, family and extracurricular activities to fit into our professional lives – especially during this current climate. This approach really pays off when the team are living a well-balanced life and are able to let the creativity and strategic thinking flow naturally.”

    She concludes,

“This is what I love about creating our independent agency from the ground up. We started the agency nine years ago in our dining room knowing that we wanted to do what we love, whilst seeing our clients succeed and our community grow. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us."

    2020 at Barefruit Marketing

    Barefruit in 2020

This is the last time we talk about 2020, we promise! Although it was a weird year last year, many lessons were learnt along the way. We’re looking back to 2020 to recognise and acknowledge our growth, our flexibility, our productivity and our teamwork (oh, and the funny times too!).

Full of hope and motivation for the beginning of a new decade, 2020 started off with a bang. Everyone was feeling refreshed for the new year after a break over the Christmas holidays. The bush fires that had devastated regional and remote NSW had finally come to an end and, truthfully spirits were high. Then came along COVID-19 and little did we know how much this virus might have on the world as we knew it.

As Australia’s cases rose, restrictions around the country tightened. Before we knew it, the Barefruit office closed, and we were all sent home to work on reduced hours. It was so difficult to see our many of our clients and local businesses really struggle through the first lockdown. Much of our work was put on hold, however our rebrand project for Korff Wealth continued on amongst a few other projects. This included the beginnings of Rafiki Zabibu wine...check it out here.

We saw the opportunity for Korff Wealth, a financial services boutique to roll out their rebrand while Australia was in lockdown. Why? Because more than ever before, Australians were turning to experts for financial advice. It was an exciting and challenging time for the Barefruit team, working over the phone and internet to deliver a rebranding project.

After 60 days at home, it was finally time for the kids to head back to school which meant we got to go back to the office. Thank goodness! It was unprecedented times for our clients, with business slowly starting back up in our town. We dialled up our flexibility to deliver a ‘Back2Business’ campaign, including coaching programs and marketing packages to generate new leads. We also worked to help our clients take advantage of government grants that were available for small businesses to use for marketing and communications. Our ability to capitalise on opportunities such as these was essential to the success we have seen in recent months, and we feel very proud about it.

Along came July and our pregnant Agency Manager, Cat, was due to have her a baby very soon. It was time for Barefruit to bring on a new employee to fill Cat’s position. And so, we welcomed Charlotte into an Account Executive position. We can’t quite believe that we were not only able to survive 2020 as a business, but we also were able to expand the team. In fact, we even needed to get Sara, our previous Agency Manager, back in for a day a week as Charlotte moved onto more and more client work. On 29 August, Cat welcomed her little girl, Bonnie, earth-side. The new Barefruit bubba has visited us a few times since, and she is absolutely gorgeous.

As business continued to improve in our local town, we were awarded with more and more projects from existing and new clients. In September, we helped North Coast Community College launch their new Primary Industries Training Centre. This was a major highlight of our year. We worked to organise a launch event for this new training centre and series of certificate III qualifications, while simultaneously creating media buzz and as much free publicity about it as possible. The event was a huge success with dignitaries, local publications and special guests all in attendance. From this, numerous articles were written about the new NCCC Primary Industries Training Centre, and NBN ran a feature on the local news the evening of the event. Read more about the fantastic day it was here.

The second half of 2020 really flew by. Before we knew it, it was Spring, and business was returning to normal in our regional town. Not to mention the onslaught of tourists from Sydney and Brisbane who greatly helped business in the Northern Rivers recover from the impacts of lockdown. We worked with artist Len Collins to set up a new website, multiple shoots for Tweed Holidays Parks took place, we worked with a start-up to create a company name and branding. We organised a Golf Day event with Northern Rivers Food in return for event sponsorship, continued ongoing work for all our retainer clients and saw our beer packaging design on the shelves of bottle shops. Recently we were awarded a TVC job for Raine and Horne.

After 414+ creative briefs, 500+ hours of pro bono work, 15 new websites and 15+ new branding projects we wrapped the year up, celebrating with a fantastic Christmas Party with Behind the Barrel. Thank you to everyone who made the year it was at Barefruit. We are forever grateful to be where we are today in 2021, thanks to the support of our staff, our clients and the local community.

Meet Ollie! Work Experience at Barefruit

    Ollie Work Experience BFM

My name is Ollie, I'm 16 and I'm in year 10 at Woodlawn. I was lucky enough to be given the amazing opportunity to join the Barefruit Marketing team for a week of work experience.

Last week I had no idea what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to Digital and TV Ads, websites and even the work that goes into designing logos and running Instagram pages. And so, I came here to learn all about it.

    What I learned at Barefruit

Since I arrived at Barefruit Marketing I have learned a lot about the marketing world. The amazing staff at Barefruit have taught me so many areas of marking including, but not confined to; SEO (search engine optimisation), SEM (search engine marketing), how to write a creative design brief, the importance of social media profiles for your business and how to run one effectively. I also learnt how to understand Google Analytics and use data to improve website traffic. Our social media marketing Gold Coast experts can help you establish your online business.

My experiences during my time here

In my time at Barefruit, I have been to some meetings where I had the opportunity to listen and learn a lot. These meetings were great in helping me understand how the ads that we see on TV and the internet get from an idea in someone's head to being on your screen at home. As well as how much time and money needs to be put into making the right ads to suit your business and demographic.

I have had the chance to work with heaps of different people who specialise in different areas here at Barefruit. Such as working with Fliss, Digital Account Director, who has explained a lot to me over my first two days. She explained what SEO is and how to increase your websites credibility. She explained how Google Ads work and how we can use the data from Google Ads to improve your SEO and monitor whether the ads are effective or not.

I spent some time with Lucy, an Account Executive, who has taught me how to run and schedule a social media profile. I wrote various types of posts and completed some research tasks. Then, using the information I gathered I wrote posts for social media and newsletters.

I have worked with Charlotte, Account Executive, who has shown me how important the look and ‘aesthetic’ of a social page is to a business in this day and age. I have been making some creative posts and preparing client Christmas presents, as well as writing this blog.

Album cover Concepts for our new song

Last week I had the pleasure of doing work experience at RockingHorse Studios in Coorabell in the Byron Hinterland, with four other year 10 students, thanks to Taryn McGregor. We had an amazing time working with Paul Pilsnenics, a professional Sound Engineer who showed us our way around a recording studio and helped us write and record a song.

Our song is called ‘Feel It’ by Hula Hands and it is now on Spotify for the world to hear. We thought 'Feel It' could use a good-looking album cover so Alex, Barefruit’s Creative Lead, has been showing me the creative process of making a cover for our song. He showed me how he would use the design brief to create an on-brief design. The product was a professional album cover which conveys the feel of the song from a glance.

    Hula Hands album cover 1
    Hula hands album cover 2
    My overall experience

I have had a great week at the Barefruit Marketing office and I have learned a lot and I really enjoyed working with all the team members I have been lucky enough to work with. This experience has given me a good insight on whether I would like going into the marketing industry when I finish school or not.

Far North Coast Creative Agency Rebrand Financial Services Firm

September has been an exciting month for Barefruit. Another one of our client projects has been recognised and featured by B&T Australia. Korff Wealth, formerly known as Yellow Brick Road Wealth and Management, Northern Rivers approached us with a rebrand brief at the beginning of the year. It was interesting timing, with Australia heading into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic mid-way through strategic and branding conversations. However, Korff Wealth saw this as an opportunity; with the current economic climate, Australians are looking for expert financial advice they can trust, more than ever. Considering, it was the perfect timing for a strategical review and rebrand of the business.

Seven Mile Brewing Co – Packaging Redesign

    Seven Mile Brewing C0.

    Packaging Redesign

    the brief

Barefruit was delighted to be awarded the brief from Seven Mile Brewing Co. to redesign the packaging of their three core craft brews; the American Pale Ale, the Cali Cream and the West Coast IPA. It was an exciting opportunity for Barefruit to work with a local business who required help in creating packaging that served both functional and brand purpose for their cans and cartons.

    our response

Barefruit and Seven Mile Brewing worked collaboratively to develop designs that overcame the challenges faced by previous packaging of the brand. Creating individual designs for each core beer was crucial to this. In addition, the brewery prides themselves on keeping their beer cold from the moment it is poured from the vat into a can. Henceforth, Barefruit strove to ensure both the can and carton's packaging was designed with this unique point of difference.

    the fruits

The result from Barefruit's and Seven Mile Brewing's collaboration is three individual can and carton designs for the brand's core beer range. The carton is specially designed for the cooler room, using cardboard that does not deteriorate in cooler temperatures and is resistant to condensation. The cans are simple in design and eye-catching, helping the brand to stand out from competitors on retailer's shelves. We also rolled out stickers for beer taps to be used in local bars with the refreshed branding.

      Leaving the rest behind

Tweed Holiday Parks made the font page of the Tweed Daily News on 6, April 2019! The article featured the new Kingscliff park that has been in operation for 12 months and has already had great success, hosting 40,000 holidaymakers since it's opening.

The demand on the park has exceeded the expectations of park managers, Luke and Brooke who "can't keep the smiles off their faces".  The park recently underwent major renovations and refurbishments, which has given the sites a nice breath of fresh air and modern look and feel. New cabins have been built, attracting holiday-makers who love beach-side accommodation but also enjoy an affordable price. The team at Barefruit sent out a Press Release to media about the success of the Kingscliff park, and we were thrilled to find the piece had been picked up for a front page feature.

Tweed Holiday Parks initially approached Barefruit to guide them through a rebrand project. We have continued this relationship and assist them with their SEO, social media, digital advertising and more. You can read more this project here.
