Here at Barefruit marketing, we thrive on encouraging our staff to achieve greatness in their chosen creative field, both in and out of work. From photographers, graphic designers, screenwriters and artists, we have a real mix of creative personalities on our team.
Our creative lead, Alex Wales, is not only a stellar designer he is an impressive artist also. Graduating from the University for Creative Arts in the UK, with honours in illustration, Alex started his career at M&C Saatchi in London; where he utilised his ideation and drawing skills to storyboard and create advertising concepts for clients. Joining the team after moving to the Northern Rivers, Alex is one of many of our international hires who brings a wealth of knowledge to the team. As Barefruit's Creative Lead, Alex oversees all traditional and digital creative output produced by the agency.
His latest project
Outside of work, Alex is an avid surfer, cycler and is a co-founder of Liar the Label, a sustainable clothing label and blog. Recently he has been excitedly working towards putting together his exhibition for The Other Art Fair at The Facility in Melbourne from the 2nd until the 5th of May. An excellent opportunity for Alex to meet and mingle with like-minded people who love art. Alex says, “It’s rare for events like these to happen during the year, and to make art accessible to all who are invested in the industry and passion of the art world.”
The Other Art Fair, presented by Saatchi Art, is one of the preeminent artist fairs in Australia. Providing the public with the opportunity to discover and buy art directly from 120 of the best emerging and independent artistic talents. Presenting handpicked artworks spanning all mediums The Other Art Affair is celebrated for its unique and immersive visitor experience.
“I will be showcasing my latest work as an emerging artist which explores my recent connections to the coastal areas of the Ballina Shire and surfing. I have been working on a series of paintings in acrylic, depicting the local coastal areas,” says Alex on the work he is submitting to the exhibition.
“The work focuses on capturing the energy of local surf locations with painterly gestures and compositions in black and white on plastic (my modern approach to the tradition of reverse painting on glass) for me it gives an effect that has a very graphic and expressionist appearance. The medium for me is the perfect choice to capture a moment and also, more importantly, movement," he says.
Alex also explores his artistic style through other mediums including canvas, paper, and board; he will be showcasing examples of this work also at the exhibition. All pieces are ready to hang, framed in natural Tasmanian Oak with UV glass to ensure longevity. You can view Alex’s portfolio here.

Earned Media, in a nutshell, is publicity. More precisely it’s publicity gained through promotional efforts other than paid media. Such as editorial coverage by a media outlet, user-generated content, product or service reviews online, social shares and general word of mouth. Consumers are social animals. Whether they’re a journalist or a social media user, they crave conversation and good ideas.
So if you want to attract positive attention and new customers, feed that to them. But, make sure you’ve covered all bases first and start creating content – content, content, content.
1. What are your customers saying about you? Do an online health check, see what they’re saying about you – Google yourself, check TripAdvisor and Facebook, do customer surveys and see if there is recurring feedback. It is highly desirable for your brand to be mentioned in a positive way.
2. Distribute and amplify your content. Customers want knowledge and content. This can take many forms depending on the channel, for example, written, imagery, video or podcast. Consider the impact a positive news story can have for your business?
3. Build credibility. Grow your product or service, reviews and testimonials. Ask your loyal customers to leave a review, ask them if they would recommend your services. When your customers become the channel, that is Earned Media via word of mouth.
With an explosion of new content channels and publishing platforms, it’s never been easier to reach potential customers. Yet it can seem very daunting and knowing what content will work in what channel, takes some planning.

Wales is Barefruit’s fourth new international hire in 12 months. He started his career at M&C Saatchi in London working for clients including Lucozade, Jameson Whiskey, NatWest Bank and East Midlands Trains.

Needs Great Graphic Design
As a marketing tool, high quality graphic design can define your brand and differentiate it from others. Without great design even the best headline and copywriting will have little cut-through. Unique graphic design creates a visual representation of what your business is about. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words — a powerful graphic or design can visually represent or convey emotion, stimulate the viewer, represent quality and express a business’ personality within a split second.
Here are some basic graphic design tips to consider when branding your business:
1. Start with the logo
Your logo is fundamental to your brand — it will be used on everything. Choose colours and fonts carefully. Make sure it’s legible and the design isn’t too intricate or fussy — logos need to easily work on all platforms from business cards to billboards.
2. The ‘no more than 2’ rule
Choose two core colours (black and white excluded) when designing for just about anything. Any more and it starts to give potential customers a headache.
3. Keep it simple
“Less is more” is a golden rule for design. This goes for your logo and use of fonts (no more than two fonts, by the way). It’s also true for layouts, printed material and anything digital, from websites to social media. The top big brands have logos that are minimal, clean and simple for a reason, think Apple, McDonalds, Nike, Virgin…
4. Leave it to the professionals

Starting with one woman in the living room of her Lennox Head home, Claire Harding explored the possibility of establishing her own boutique marketing agency, founded on providing the Lennox community with one thing in mind – we want to do what we love, be part of the business community and help them grow.
Barefruit Marketing, established in early 2012 is now a full service, integrated marketing agency run by husband and wife Claire and Evan Harding. Together they have over 40 years combined experience, as marketing consultants in the communications industry, in the UK and Australia.
The business has grown year on year, and now employs 8 local people and the service of several local contractors. Barefruit works independently as the client’s ‘marketing department’ or alongside an existing marketing team on an ongoing or project basis. Services include strategic planning, branding, advertising, websites, graphic design, social media management, PR and Events.
Barefruit have now won the 'Business of the Year' award at the Lennox Head Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards 2017 for the second consecutive year, winning this award as well as the award for the Professional Services category both years too.
To be recognised for this award is a huge achievement and one that all Lennox Head business owners would love to be recognised for, but there could only be one winner and lucky Barefruit take the award home two years in a row.
"We can’t believe it! Last year was a massive honour, to win Business of the Year in the town that we have made home, amongst so many wonderfully talented people. To win this award for the second consecutive year is a huge achievement for our team and our business, especially being up against so many other contenders, many of which we know," Claire said.
We are based in River Street, Ballina. The office dubbed ‘Barefruit Towers’ comprises of open plan workspaces, breakout sections highlighted with the bright Barefruit orange, artwork and a meeting/brainstorming room with space for clients and the Barefruit team to meet and regularly create. They also have a second dedicated home office space in Lennox Head (where the story began).
"We love Lennox (‘scuse the pun) and chose to live, raise our family and start our business here. The recent Love Lennox Festival was a really proud day for Lennox, with so many businesses getting behind it – the Chamber did a fantastic job pulling it together and we were proud to be part of it" Claire said.

We are greatly involved within the local community, supporting and working with local businesses and events, donating their time at the Love Lennox Festival for the last few years, as well as working with local businesses including BCMC (Ballina Campervan & Motorhome Centre) and Horizon Motorhomes, who took home the ‘Best Big Business’ Award and Beef+Beach Lennox Head who also took home the award for the 'Best Visitor Experience in Hospitality' Monday night.
Mrs Harding is also a dedicated board member for the Rafiki Mwema charity, a therapeutic safe house for young girls and boys in Kenya, run by three businesswomen from Lennox Head.
"We are very proud to be Lennox residents, business owners and a part of the local community. We want to do what we love, for people and brands that interest and inspire us, and we are so lucky that we have so many interesting and inspiring brands and people around us”, she said.
