When you engage and ask your followers for their voice, opinions and ideas, you start to build trust and transparency, as well as getting great feedback you can use to up your social game.

Instagram Live opens up a whole new level of user engagement. Brands can showcase their products or services, demonstrate in-real-life use, discuss the production process – you can talk about anything in great detail which creates really valuable information for customers. Users that join the Live can pose questions and make comments in real-time, creating an authentic brand-customer experience you can’t simulate anywhere else.

Video content is everything on Instagram and you must use it showcase your products or services in fun, engaging and authentic ways. Product shots just don’t cut it anymore, so hit the record button instead. Don’t stress about not having all the tech skills, your smartphone and the editing software in Instagram is all you need. And the more ‘real’ you can be, the better.

Therefore, it goes without saying, no business should ignore Facebook as a powerful advertising channel. Affordable and dynamic, Facebook ads can be a game changer for small-to-medium-sized businesses. The best bit, you’re in control of your budget, deciding exactly how much you want to spend and when.

From age, to location, interests and hobbies, professions and relationship status (and more!), you can create an incredibly targeted audience who will receive and hopefully respond to your communications. But targeting doesn’t stop there. Facebook has so much data on each user, it can target people based on how they’re predicted to act when they see your ad. If you want more website traffic, optimise your ad for landing page views. If you want more sales, optimise for purchases. An Integrated Approach is Always Best

Digital advertising is great, but it’s even better when you integrate your campaign across both online and offline channels (we’re talking print ads in the Lennox Wave, radio, billboards etc). You’ll reach more people with more frequency in different areas of their life, reminding them of your brand.

Don’t forget the power of complementing your campaign with organic social content. Post about it on your Facebook and Instagram feed, your stories, reels and IGTV. Write blogs and send eDMs. Not only does this reinforce your messaging, but you may be able to authentically connect with your following. Branch out to other platforms like LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube and TikTok (hint: If you’re targeting young mums, download TikTok now).

How does Instagram removing ‘likes’ affect my business?

Instagram trials hidden likes

From today, Instagram users in Australia will no longer be able to see the total number of 'likes' on posts. While you will still be able to see the number of likes on your own posts, you won't be able to see likes on others posts and vice versa.

This is part of a trial to remove pressure from users on the platform. “We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love,” said Mia Garlick, the Facebook Australia and New Zealand director of policy. “We are now rolling the test out to Australia so we can learn more about how this can benefit people’s experiences on Instagram, and whether this change can help people focus less on likes and more on telling their story.”

Measurement tools and engagement metrics will still be available, so the change won't affect business users. Influencers, on the other hand, who use the number of likes they receive on posts to secure partnership deals, will have to start focusing on other metrics. With so many people mindlessly scrolling Instagram and liking posts, focussing on post saves, swipe-up to buy and reach are far more important measures of engagement, that are more likely to lead to a sale.

A decision will be made at a later date on whether or not the update will be made permanent.
