    Business Communications During Crisis

It’s over a month now since our region saw the most devastating flood event ever recorded. And what an intense time it has been for our community. Our hearts go out to those affected (both directly and indirectly) and we extend our deepest gratitude for everyone who answered (and continue to answer) the call for help from friends, family, neighbours, and strangers; getting stuck in to help where it was (is) needed most.

Our local business community had already been tested and pushed to their absolute limits over the last few years with Covid, but nothing could prepare us for the tragedy of this natural disaster. The events that unfolded hour by hour and day by day were horrific and we think it’s safe to say, that those of us who had businesses left, were in complete shock of what to do next.

    Check on your people

Our first move as a business, was to reach out to our own team and make sure they were safe or if they needed anything. Once the team were all accounted for, we needed to check on the other important people that bring our business to life – clients, suppliers, and contractors. We quickly assessed each of their individual situations and acted accordingly. Ranging from completely devastated to temporarily closed, and everything in between, one clear theme emerged – sensitivity, empathy and relevance were needed across the board in all business communications.

    Business Communications During A Crisis

    Sensitivity and Empathy

Even if your business was completely unaffected from the floods it’s likely that your customers have been affected in some way. Acknowledge the event and how your business is responding. Even if you intend to carry on business as usual, it’s not advisable to downplay or ignore the situation for fear of scaring off potential customers.
It is also imperative that your tone of voice and the language you use is sensitive to what people might be feeling and experiencing.

    Relevance

Asking people to buy while they (or those around them) are in trauma and crisis is only going to do harm to your business reputation. Instead, communicate what you can do or offer to others at this time to make life a little easier. Make sure you check on all running and scheduled campaigns and pause them if you need to. Check all scheduled social media posts and decide if they are still relevant or whether they should be rescheduled for another time. Ensure that any automated communications are reviewed, tweaked, and amended to reflect the current situation. Emails that were drafted weeks ago, may not be well-received. We recommend sending out an email to your entire database acknowledging the crisis, including any information about how your business has been affected and what this means for regular business operations (trading hours, possible delays, etc) and how you intend to help the community.

    A helping hand

In the best-case scenario, you would find ways that your business can help. We decided to pay all our team two full days for volunteering and cleaning up, and we know we certainly weren’t the only business doing this. It was important we got involved because we love and are part of this community and that’s what we do – help each other. We live in such a loving, caring community and we are so proud to be part of it. We are in this together now and for months to come. We encourage anyone who has yet to reach out and help, to do it. Not only is it rewarding, but it’s the right thing to do.

Northern Rivers – Our hearts are with you.

    The work

Barefruit was engaged to work with the local non-for-profit community radio station, BayFM as part of a pro bono project to help launch its new brand identity and new position as a digital platform.

The long-standing radio station, established in the early 90s, sounded the alarm bells as funds were reaching a record low in February last year. With the station,  just weeks from closing the business identified the need to strengthen the brand and increase funding and that’s when Barefruit acquired the project.

The rebrand includes a black and white logo which was simplified to be more digitally friendly, flexible and to include the world-famous name ‘Byron’. The brand’s fonts, colours, and images were all created for today’s digital world. Their new website is now live bayfm.org and uses phrases such as ‘Listen like a local', ‘Tune In. Chill out. Sign Up’ which is very much in line with Byron Bay and its culture.

Bay FM is extremely happy that we helped without hesitation and without charge, giving the business more time and better service than we could have hoped for.

Marketing, even when you’re crazy busy

      Juggling Marketing When You're Busy

Our region has been so fortunate to have had so much business recently. We’ve heard that many local businesses have been overwhelmed with demand. Considering how difficult 2020 was, this is an amazing place to be so soon after. Whether you’re crazy busy with high demand, expanding your business or working towards getting back to pre-COVID times, marketing is always important.

Marketing does help drive sales, and so much more than that. So even if you think you’re busy now, you’d be taking a big gamble to let it slide from your business strategy. The Northern Rivers has been flooded with visitors, and your marketing tells these people why they should consider you. Without these messages, your competitors will be thanking you.

      In It to Win It

If you’re not in the game, you can’t win. Good marketing makes consumers think of you first when they need the product or service you offer. The brand awareness, interest and desire for your brand will impact your sales positively, no doubt. Keeping up with social media, traditional advertising, emails, digital marketing, SEO (whatever forms your strategy) keeps your brand in the forefront of consumer’s minds. If you drop your marketing efforts, even from just one channel, your competitors will already be ahead of you. Vying for consumer’s attention is a competitive game, so you must always play if you’re serious about growing your business.

      Slow and Steady

It’s hard to keep up with marketing when you’re busy but you can’t let it take a back, or even a side seat. Consistency always wins. Right now is a great opportunity to put long-term marketing strategies in place to drive awareness and sales for the future. With a surge in domestic travel and people moving to the area, you can expect to see business steady all year round and your marketing efforts need to reflect this. You’ll need to continuously communicate with visitors, the locals and the new people arriving in our area. Businesses that never stop marketing experience a forward-momentum situation, like a train getting faster and faster along the tracks. Don’t slam the brakes on your marketing when you’re busy - doing so could slow down your sales in the future. To maintain sales (and to grow them!), be consistent.

      Always Communicate

Tactics such as social media marketing, email marketing, print, TV advertising and PR help you tell your brand story. The more you communicate value to consumers, the more they consider you a voice of authority in the industry, especially if you’ve got something interesting, valuable or different to say. In 2021, brand activism is extremely important to influence purchase decision-making, so tell your story and communicate your brand’s personality to consumers.

Having a long-term strategy and consistency in your marketing activities helps you compete against your competitors, maintain and drive sales in the future and grow your business. To keep moving forward, don’t stop what you’re doing.

Fluro Friday to Free the Funk!

      Fluro Friday

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, so to help break the stigma and start a conversation about mental health, some of the Barefruit team joined the community Fluro Friday event on Friday 11th October in Lennox.

Organised by Trent Chapman from Movement Function Fitness, the morning included an anti bad vibes circle, surfing, a dance workout, breakfast and some stand-up comedy. Barefruit was there providing OJ for all of those who braved the dark, cold morning!

Fluro Friday was born at Bondi Beach 6 years ago – a weekly sunrise session where the community dress up in the brightest outfits possible and share stories, surf and do yoga to raise awareness of mental health.  It has now spread to more than 200 beaches worldwide, and offers surf programs to people facing mental health challenges. You can read more about the OneWave foundation and all they do here, and check out what beaches run regular Fluro Friday events here.

1 in 5 people experience mental health issues each year and 65% of these people don't seek treatment. Having a safe space to talk about mental health can save lives, and that is exactly what OneWave is doing…..sometimes one wave is all it takes.  Yew!

Barefruits top 5 tips on Keeping Australia Beautiful

Over the past few years Barefruit has been implementing strategies and practices to lower our environmental impact, including banning all single use plastics in the office. A litter free and sustainable future is one of Barefruits main goals for the future and we love encouraging other local businesses to participate also. So, as it’s Keep Australia Beautiful week, we thought it was only fitting to share our top 5 tips to keeping our local community beautiful!

Reduce Single Use – An initiative produced through the collaboration between Barefruit Marketing and the Ballina Shire Councils ‘Waste Warriors’. Established to encourage other businesses in the local area to be more accountable. Including no single use plastics, eco-friendly office practices such as double-sided printing and using online filing systems, reusable crockery provided for staff lunches and the use of keep cups on coffee runs!

Take three for the sea – Residing in the coastal town of Ballina we all know the impact that microplastics and litter are having on our beautiful waterways. On our morning walks or afternoon runs we all consciously make an effort to clean the areas we are in and encourage others to do so too!

Shop local – Farmers markets, wholefood shops and road side stalls all offer great produce and supplies that don’t come over packaged. From fruit, veg and meat to natural products or loose-leaf teas. It’s a great way to support your local economy also.

Be prepared – Keep extra reusable bags in your car or in the workplace, invest in a keep cup and some good quality lunch containers. Being prepared will mean you won’t be left with no other options.

Recycle – Easy peasy lemon squeezy recycling. Check out the council’s great A-Z resource to learn what items go into what bin.

Find out more about Keep Australia Beautiful week and how to get involved here.

      The Future is NO Plastic

      Reduce Single Use

At Barefruit Marketing we are proud supporters of Ballina’s ‘Reduce Single Use’ challenge. In collaboration with Ballina Shire Council and Waste Warriors, we initiated the challenge to get other businesses on board after our own successful office challenge.

At the beginning of 2018, the Barefruit team watched a documentary called ‘A Plastic Ocean’. It had a profound effect – we were horrified and saddened by what we learned, and deeply inspired to create change. A new mindset was born within the office…

The Barefruit mindset, a forever habit, or our planet will get sick, and so will our animals and children and their children…

We realised how much we were contributing to the problem by using single use coffee cups, takeaway containers and food packaging, so we started an office challenge. We purchased reusable coffee cups, drink bottles and shopping bags for the team, and set up the following rules:

        • NO single use plastics
          1. NO disposable coffee cups – only reusable cups to be used
          2. reuse coffee carrying trays
          3. BYO bowl/crockery to local cafes
        • Sustainable switches
          1. reusable rags instead of paper towels
          2. keep cups
          3. reusable shopping bags
          4. metal straws over single-use plastic ones
          5. reusable cutlery and plates over toss-away versions
          6. beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap
        • Composting food scraps
        • Double-sided printing policy
        • Car sharing/pooling to meetings
        • Dropbox filing system instead of paper filing
        • Correct recycling

Breaking the above rules = 10 burpees (in the office)

Within no time, this new way of thinking was second nature, and our waste has become minimal.

Have you joined the Reduce Single Use Challenge yet? Head over to @reducesingleuse to sign up your business and see how much of a difference you can make. We are proud supporters of this great initiative  #reducesingleuseballina

      FAW Art Exhibition

Here at Barefruit marketing, we thrive on encouraging our staff to achieve greatness in their chosen creative field, both in and out of work. From photographers, graphic designers, screenwriters and artists, we have a real mix of creative personalities on our team.

Our creative lead, Alex Wales, is not only a stellar designer he is an impressive artist also. Graduating from the University for Creative Arts in the UK, with honours in illustration, Alex started his career at M&C Saatchi in London; where he utilised his ideation and drawing skills to storyboard and create advertising concepts for clients. Joining the team after moving to the Northern Rivers, Alex is one of many of our international hires who brings a wealth of knowledge to the team. As Barefruit's Creative Lead, Alex oversees all traditional and digital creative output produced by the agency.

      His latest project

Outside of work, Alex is an avid surfer, cycler and is a co-founder of Liar the Label, a sustainable clothing label and blog. Recently he has been excitedly working towards putting together his exhibition for The Other Art Fair at The Facility in Melbourne from the 2nd until the 5th of May. An excellent opportunity for Alex to meet and mingle with like-minded people who love art. Alex says, “It’s rare for events like these to happen during the year, and to make art accessible to all who are invested in the industry and passion of the art world.”

“I will be showcasing my latest work as an emerging artist which explores my recent connections to the coastal areas of the Ballina Shire and surfing. I have been working on a series of paintings in acrylic, depicting the local coastal areas,” says Alex on the work he is submitting to the exhibition.

“The work focuses on capturing the energy of local surf locations with painterly gestures and compositions in black and white on plastic (my modern approach to the tradition of reverse painting on glass) for me it gives an effect that has a very graphic and expressionist appearance. The medium for me is the perfect choice to capture a moment and also, more importantly, movement," he says.

Alex also explores his artistic style through other mediums including canvas, paper, and board; he will be showcasing examples of this work also at the exhibition. All pieces are ready to hang, framed in natural Tasmanian Oak with UV glass to ensure longevity. You can view Alex’s portfolio here.

A fresh, fruity and fabulous new look for Barefruit

marketing agency rebrands and celebrates 7th anniversary

Our visual identity has evolved a fair amount since we ‘planted the seed’ back in 2012 and in that time our team has grown, as have the services we provide. To mark our 7th birthday, we're peeling off the layers and revealing a fresh new look.

Co-Founder and Chief Juicer, Claire Harding says, “What better way to celebrate seven years in the business than with a brand refresh?!”

“Our vision and values remain the same, however, it was time to evolve our brand mark. Our new brand holds onto the symbolism of 'the fruit' whilst modernising the mark, making it a simple, contemporary and a unique lockup,” she continues.

“All great brands change their marks over time - think Apple, Amazon, Nike, Google. The aim is to have a mark that your customers recognise in the blink of an eye, that needs no words,” she says.

From old to new, see how our brand has evolved...

Eleven years ago, Claire and Evan Harding – marketing professionals with over 40 years’ combined experience – moved from London to the Northern Rivers in search of a new life and in 2012 they set up their business, a boutique marketing agency focussed on inspirational, creative marketing that would really work - in essence, help businesses to fructify or bear fruit.

They weren’t to know how this idea would develop over the coming years through a chain of exciting events. Their passion for growth and to help businesses thrive, along with their down to earth approach, brought in key clients who were taken by Barefruit’s bold ideas and strategies - including Ballina Campervans, Motorhomes & CaravansTweed Coast Holiday Parks and Westlawn Finance.

      marketing agency turn 7

During their life-span, Barefruit Marketing have collected a number of prestigious and local awards including, in 2016 & 2017 'Business of the Year' and 'Professional Services' (Lennox Head Chamber of Commerce Awards), 'Excellence in Small Business (Northern Rivers Business Awards), 'State Finalists - Marketing Communications' (National Optus My Business Awards). In 2018, they were nominated as finalists for 'Young Employee of the Year' and the 'Professional Services' (Ballina Business Awards).

The business has rapidly expanded, with increased demand locally and nationally for a regional agency providing city experience and expertise across the whole marketing realm – from research, branding, strategy and planning to advertising, design, PR, events, website design and digital marketing. Employing 14 creative humans with varied national and international experience including global agency roles, together they operate as the Barefruit Marketing team, based in the centre of Ballina’s CBD – the perfect spot to service clients throughout the Northern Rivers and beyond.

The bright Barefruit orange branding cannot be missed as you go by the Riverwalk Arcade in Ballina. Inside, the agency is open plan, energetic and inspiring, with their own wall garden, ‘personalised’ gallery and coffee and dance tunes on tap all day – and when a brief is on, all night.

The Barefruit office is also home to 'Rafiki Mwema' a not-for-profit charity supporting traumatised children in Kenya, of which Claire is a board member and Barefruit Marketing are corporate sponsors.

The Barefruit story is a great example of what hard work, networking, belief, and passion in your business can bring. "Don't be afraid to grow and to challenge the norm. We are so thankful to our wonderful clients, the local community, our staff and the Business Chambers for believing in what we do and giving us the drive to keep getting better," says Co-Founder and Head Harvester, Evan Harding.
