Barefruits top 5 tips on Keeping Australia Beautiful

Over the past few years Barefruit has been implementing strategies and practices to lower our environmental impact, including banning all single use plastics in the office. A litter free and sustainable future is one of Barefruits main goals for the future and we love encouraging other local businesses to participate also. So, as it’s Keep Australia Beautiful week, we thought it was only fitting to share our top 5 tips to keeping our local community beautiful!

Reduce Single Use – An initiative produced through the collaboration between Barefruit Marketing and the Ballina Shire Councils ‘Waste Warriors’. Established to encourage other businesses in the local area to be more accountable. Including no single use plastics, eco-friendly office practices such as double-sided printing and using online filing systems, reusable crockery provided for staff lunches and the use of keep cups on coffee runs!

Take three for the sea – Residing in the coastal town of Ballina we all know the impact that microplastics and litter are having on our beautiful waterways. On our morning walks or afternoon runs we all consciously make an effort to clean the areas we are in and encourage others to do so too!

Shop local – Farmers markets, wholefood shops and road side stalls all offer great produce and supplies that don’t come over packaged. From fruit, veg and meat to natural products or loose-leaf teas. It’s a great way to support your local economy also.

Be prepared – Keep extra reusable bags in your car or in the workplace, invest in a keep cup and some good quality lunch containers. Being prepared will mean you won’t be left with no other options.

Recycle – Easy peasy lemon squeezy recycling. Check out the council’s great A-Z resource to learn what items go into what bin.

Ballina Business Excellence Awards 2019

Ballina Business Excellence Awards Win for Barefruit Marketing

The juicy team at Barefruit has taken out another accolade, winning ‘2019 Business Excellence in Business and Professional Services’ at the Ballina Shire Business Awards on Saturday August 10thAWARDS NIGHT

We were in top company competing with a variety of business services including real estate agencies, mortgage lenders and consulting companies.

Chief Juicer Evan Harding says “We feel that a large part of our success can be attributed to creating a workplace culture that is passionate - passionate about what we do for our clients, but also about our team’s wellbeing, and how we give back to the local community and beyond.”

passion

He goes on to say “We have brought together a team of highly creative and skilled individuals, who are dedicated to seeing their clients succeed in all aspects of their business. We spend the time to build personal relationships in order to thoroughly understand their goals and devise an individual strategy to ultimately deliver results.”

workplace wellbeing

We extend this approach internally as well. Our Agency manager says that we “Have brought together a group of people who truly care about each other. We work around individual schedules and have flexible hours which allow certain life, family and extracurricular activities to fit into our professional lives. This approach really pays off when the team are living a well-balanced life and are able to let the creativity and strategic thinking flow naturally”.

giving back

We also donate a heap of hours on a pro bono basis working closely with community projects and not for profits. This year we dedicated our time and resources to the Ballina Shire’s ‘Reduce Single Use’ campaign, Biala Support Services (supporting people with disabilities) and Rafiki Mwema (who recently gained worldwide exposure when they were one of fifteen charities followed on Instagram by the Sussex Royals Harry and Megan).

Chief Juicer Claire Harding notes that “This is what I love about creating this agency from the ground up. We are able to craft a special workplace in the way we want to see change in business…and the world. I started this agency seven years ago in my dining room knowing that I wanted to do what I love, while seeing clients succeed and the community grow. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.”

Ballina RSL: Rebranding our local icon

Ballina RSL Rebrand by Barefruit Marketing

We love sharing the work that we do – especially when that work is so recognisable within our local business community!

The Ballina RSL approached Barefruit over 15 months ago to assist in the development of a Strategic Marketing Plan and a rebrand. The result was a TVC (currently being aired) which focusses on the Ballina RSL’s “all-in” offering; showcasing the business’ appeal to a vast range of audiences. It cleverly picks out the words “all-in” that appear in its place name Ballina.

The team at Barefruit are an experienced bunch of international talent from major agencies who can bring knowledge and make the most out of our clients budgets. Our best work is achieved when we are able to develop close relationships with our clients to best understand their brand and develop a solution to suit their needs.

“This was a major undertaking for the RSL” states Bill Coulter, Ballina RSL CEO. “Working with the Barefruit team we now have a marketing plan, fresh and exciting new brand and a TVC managed and produced by Barefruit and shot by Rest Your Eyes to let our community and visitors know what we have to offer. All in under 15 months. We are really proud of the end result”.

Plain speaking: Search Engine Optimisation

SEO and SEM at Barefruit Marketing

In light of our recent pledge to serve our clients as Plain Speaking Creative Thinkers, we’re here to demystify two of the most underrated acronyms in marketing; SEO and SEM. I know what you're thinking "Aren't they the same thing??" Put simply, nope. Here's why...

Search engine optimisation and search engine marketing are two separate marketing strategies that work hand in hand to drive traffic to your website. However, any traffic is not, in fact, good traffic. You want to be attracting quality over quantity i.e. potential customers rather than bots or people who are just going to bounce straight off your site - which in the long-run affects your ranking negatively.

So what is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation is the process of maximising the amount of traffic to your website. This is done by ensuring your website ranks high in the results returned by search engines, think Google, Bing etc. SEO consists of on and off-page activities including keyword optimised blog content, building authentic links from other sites to your website and optimising page content.

...and what is SEM?

Search Engine Marketing is a form of internet marketing that utilises paid search avenues such as Pay Per Click (PPC) Google Ads. Then there is paid Social Media marketing – but that’s another post altogether! Another method is landing page creation which is ideal for converting click-through traffic into leads. SEM is a customisable solution for any business wanting to drive traffic to their website

Through a whole range of tailored solutions, you can utilise SEO and SEM to work wonders for your website. If you’ve been contemplating looking into this service for your business, you can find out more here or register your interest below for more information.

How does Instagram removing ‘likes’ affect my business?

Instagram trials hidden likes

From today, Instagram users in Australia will no longer be able to see the total number of 'likes' on posts. While you will still be able to see the number of likes on your own posts, you won't be able to see likes on others posts and vice versa.

This is part of a trial to remove pressure from users on the platform. “We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love,” said Mia Garlick, the Facebook Australia and New Zealand director of policy. “We are now rolling the test out to Australia so we can learn more about how this can benefit people’s experiences on Instagram, and whether this change can help people focus less on likes and more on telling their story.”

Measurement tools and engagement metrics will still be available, so the change won't affect business users. Influencers, on the other hand, who use the number of likes they receive on posts to secure partnership deals, will have to start focusing on other metrics. With so many people mindlessly scrolling Instagram and liking posts, focussing on post saves, swipe-up to buy and reach are far more important measures of engagement, that are more likely to lead to a sale.

A decision will be made at a later date on whether or not the update will be made permanent.

If you would like more information on how this may implicate you or if you are interested in learning more about Social Media Marketing for your business contact us for a chat!

Fresh Fruit for the Office

Fliss and Cat Barefruit Employees

Here at Barefruit, we love fresh fruit ??? Not just the type you get from the local grocer but also new additions to our team!

Our management team put their noggins together and defined what makes a stand-out Barefruit employee? The ability to determine effective strategies, to see the bigger picture and to know that no ‘one size fits all’ in the world of marketing. With this in mind, Barefruit recently recruited two new team members – a new Digital Account Director, Felismina Jom, and Agency Manager, Cat Smith. Felismina is a creative thinker, a mother of two, and a kind and happy soul. While Cat is a fun-loving Jill of all trades whose creativity and caring nature flows into her work seamlessly; and, of course, they’re both a bit fruity!

Meet Cat – Doggo Lover and Agency Manager

Originating from New Zealand Cat has also previously worked for companies such as Vodafone, KPMG and Westpac. On relocating to Sydney Australia in 2012, Cat worked at RedBalloon and Macquarie Bank, before moving to Lennox Head in 2016. Cat is an experienced Office Manager and Executive Assistant, generally working in HR or Learning and Development teams.

Cat, while formally appointed the Agency Manager at Barefruit, also looks after everything from finance and Human Resources (HR) to cleaning the fish tank that is home to our resident fish named ‘Chips’! By far the most important part of Cat’s role, besides Chips, is the wellbeing of the Barefruit team. She has a passion for creating a great employee experience and work culture for the team. This enthusiasm stems from her time at RedBalloon as their Employee Experience Coordinator. Cat also holds a diploma in Event Management and Interior Design and has her own creative hobby business – making custom macramé wall hangings and hosting workshops in her spare time. You can find her work on Instagram and Facebook by searching for The Knot Smith.

Meet Felisimina – Digital Account Director and Tap Dancing Diva

Felisminas creative nature had her dreaming of a career as a tap dancer! But instead, she opted for University and graduated with a Business Degree. Just like her tap-dancing days, she moved quickly and tapped into her skills to begin her career as a Change Management Consultant working on training and communication for large scale IT projects. This role set Felismina up as a sort of “middle-woman” for the technical/digital world.

Always being one to jump at opportunities that come her way, Felismina and her husband left corporate jobs to start their very own digital agency in 2000 – back when the world was only in Web 1.0! Witnessing the World Wide Web evolve and how it has affected businesses, of all scales, Felismina has supported many small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to thrive through digital solutions. While the agency continues to operate in Sydney, Felismina, her husband and two sons Mani and Max made the leap North to the beautiful town of Lennox Head. Felismina utilised her experience and expertise to support small business owners through government programs where she aided them in implementing their very own digital strategies. In pivoting back to agency work at Barefruit Marketing, Felismina remains passionate about helping clients to navigate the increasingly complex digital world to meet real business objectives. Bringing her renewed energy to implement digital solutions at Barefruit – the team can’t wait to see what she achieves.

Cat and Felismina have joined the team at an exciting time for Barefruit. Started by Claire and Evan Harding after a collective 30-year career in UK agencies, the agency is celebrating its seventh year as an all-service agency; marking the occasion with a branding refresh and awareness campaigns that encompass the Barefruit ethos. With an increasing demand for marketing locally and nationally, the Barefruit Marketing team are excited about what’s in store. This regional agency provides expertise right across the marketing mix – from strategy and planning to advertising, design, PR, events, website design and Felismina’s speciality, digital marketing.

As the agency expands we are always on the lookout for talented and creative individuals who share the Barefruit Marketing Ethos. Get in touch with the team and say hey!

The Future is NO Plastic

Reduce Single Use

At Barefruit Marketing we are proud supporters of Ballina’s ‘Reduce Single Use’ challenge. In collaboration with Ballina Shire Council and Waste Warriors, we initiated the challenge to get other businesses on board after our own successful office challenge.

At the beginning of 2018, the Barefruit team watched a documentary called ‘A Plastic Ocean’. It had a profound effect – we were horrified and saddened by what we learned, and deeply inspired to create change. A new mindset was born within the office…

The Barefruit mindset, a forever habit, or our planet will get sick, and so will our animals and children and their children…

We realised how much we were contributing to the problem by using single use coffee cups, takeaway containers and food packaging, so we started an office challenge. We purchased reusable coffee cups, drink bottles and shopping bags for the team, and set up the following rules:

    • NO single use plastics
      1. NO disposable coffee cups – only reusable cups to be used
      2. reuse coffee carrying trays
      3. BYO bowl/crockery to local cafes
    • Sustainable switches
      1. reusable rags instead of paper towels
      2. keep cups
      3. reusable shopping bags
      4. metal straws over single-use plastic ones
      5. reusable cutlery and plates over toss-away versions
      6. beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap
    • Composting food scraps
    • Double-sided printing policy
    • Car sharing/pooling to meetings
    • Dropbox filing system instead of paper filing
    • Correct recycling

Breaking the above rules = 10 burpees (in the office)

Within no time, this new way of thinking was second nature, and our waste has become minimal.

Have you joined the Reduce Single Use Challenge yet? Head over to @reducesingleuse to sign up your business and see how much of a difference you can make. We are proud supporters of this great initiative  #reducesingleuseballina

I have been working on a series of paintings in acrylic, depicting the local coastal areas,” says Alex on the work he is submitting to the exhibition.

“The work focuses on capturing the energy of local surf locations with painterly gestures and compositions in black and white on plastic (my modern approach to the tradition of reverse painting on glass) for me it gives an effect that has a very graphic and expressionist appearance. The medium for me is the perfect choice to capture a moment and also, more importantly, movement," he says.

Alex also explores his artistic style through other mediums including canvas, paper, and board; he will be showcasing examples of this work also at the exhibition. All pieces are ready to hang, framed in natural Tasmanian Oak with UV glass to ensure longevity. You can view Alex’s portfolio here.

Rafiki Corporate Sponsorship Close to the Heart

earned media

Barefruit’s Co-founder, Chief Juicer and self-confessed workaholic, Claire Harding, is also a bit of a fundraiser. She is heavily involved with the charity Rafiki Mwema, being a board member since the beginning in 2014 and besties with CEO and Co-founder, Sarah Rosborg.

The team at Barefruit witness first-hand the love and dedication Rafiki’s intrepid leader, Sarah Rosborg, puts into the charity as the HQ is located in our office. So, it was only fitting that Barefruit became a Bronze Sponsor of this amazing Charity. For years Claire has been supporting the charity in any way that she can and believes that corporate sponsorship not only fulfils a business’s corporate responsibility but is the perfect answer for any business looking to make a difference. The work that Rafiki Mwema does perfectly aligns with the values of our team, both personally and professionally. Being so closely involved with Rafiki, Barefruit staff are encouraged to dedicate a portion of their time to Rafiki. As a corporate sponsor and with Claire being a board member, means that we are often involved in the planning and marketing of Rafiki events and fundraisers.

So, what is Rafiki Mwema?

A not for profit organisation that works to change the lives of profoundly traumatised children who have experienced abuse in Kenya. Aiming to transform even the most deeply troubled children into loving, confident and joyful children through love and safety. Home to 70 boys and girls from the ages of 18 months to 18 years. A team of 45 staff support the children through their court cases, education, medical treatments, therapy and strive to provide the children with a warm, loving, playful and empathetic environment. To date, approximately 120 children have returned home to the care of a safe family member, with the Rafiki Mwema’s Outreach Team continuing to monitor the child and visit them in their community.

How can you get involved?

“It doesn’t have to be big – if we all just do something; we can make a difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in the world – and give them a voice and the childhood they deserve,” notes Claire on contributing to this cause. Rafiki offers several levels of sponsorship and will happily work with you to customise a package that suits your situation. Whatever you choose to contribute, every donation, no matter how small, makes a huge difference in the lives of the children at Rafiki Mwema. 50 AUD a month will provide meals for a child, and the equivalent to ‘a coffee for a month’ (5 AUD) will support the outreach team, making sure the children are safe when they return home.

There’s a variety of options when becoming a corporate sponsor. Depending on the level of sponsorship you choose you will have access to a range of great opportunities including co-naming a project, receiving support from the Rafiki team if you choose to hold your own fundraiser and the opportunity to get close to the charity and its projects.

As a mother, Claire witnesses first-hand how Rafiki is a great charity for children to get involved in as well. Her own son sends personalised cards, photos and letters to the children. And, what’s more? Anyone can do this, and it is encouraged as it makes such a difference in the lives of the children at Rafiki, being able to make a connection with other children, all over the world.

“You are so close to the Rafiki charity and you get to see where your money is going. You are able to have a first-hand connection with the child you are sponsoring,” a major point of difference that Claire points out.

At Rafiki Mwema they rely solely on the support of their sponsors to pay for the ongoing running costs to house the 70 children in their care, to continue to support the 120 children who have returned home and cover the unforeseen medical expenses that are unfortunately a part of rescuing and caring for severely abused young children. The fundraising will never end. 100% of the money donated or raised goes directly to the Rafiki Mwema house, with the profit from merchandise sales covering admin costs such as bank fees, printing etc.

“Choosing to help mend broken little bodies, minds and hearts is the greatest return on any
investment you’ll ever make”
Sarah Rosborg, Co-Founder and CEO of Rafiki Mwema
